Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition that affects the large intestine.  Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) consists of multiple symptoms like abdominal pain, abdominal cramping, bloating, and changes in bowel movements all happening together.

While the actual cause for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in still unclear, it can affect anyone.  However, it is twice as likely to occur in women compared to men, and in most cases it begins with people under the age of 45.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is commonly classified into one of four types, these classifications help health care providers attempt to treat the symptoms.

The four classifications are:

  • IBS-C: Irritable Bowel Syndrome with “Constipation” – which is characterized by a hard stool occurring at least 25% of the time and having a loose or watery stool less than 25% of the time.
  • IBS-D: Irritable Bowel Syndrome with “Diarrhea” – which is characterized by a loose or watery stool at least 25% of the time and a hard stool less than 25% of the time.
  • IBS-M: Irritable Bowel Syndrome “Mixed” – which is characterized by a loose or watery stool at least 25% of the time AND a hard stool also at least 25% of the time.
  • IBS-U: Irritable Bowel Syndrome “Unsubtyped” – which is characterized by having a hard stool less than 25% of the time AND a hard stool less than 25% of the time.
  • It is also very possible for people to have their classifications switch from time to time, depending on the severity of the digestive disorder as well as the food eaten.
