Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is more common than what you may think

Having Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is more common than what you may think.

About half a million of Americans have this digestive disease, which affects both women and men. Unfortunately, it seems to run in families, so if your parents or any other relative has it, there’s a good chance you may develop it too. You can get it at any age, however, patients reported that their symptoms started mostly between the ages of 15 and 30 years old.

So, what is Ulcerative Colitis? It is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) where the inner lining of your colon and rectum gets inflamed, causing open sores and inflamed tissue. The inflammation usually starts in your rectum but can spread later through your entire colon. This inflammation destroys the cells that make up the lining of your colon -which can lead to having your colon lining bleed. This is where it can get complicated, as it can become infected with pus and mucus.

While the experts don’t know exactly what causes this disease, they know that your immune system plays a big role.

Yet, it’s not clear if the changes in your immune system are what causes Ulcerative Colitis (UC), or if Ulcerative Colitis (UC) causes your immune system to change.

So, what happens when the rectum becomes inflamed, you may ask? The rectum cannot retain stools for long periods of time anymore, meaning that you’ll feel forced to make more frequent and urgent bowel movements. This can be both painful, uncomfortable, and also embarrassing.

Now there’s 4 different types of Ulcerative Colitis (UC):

  • Ulcerative proctitis, which affects only your rectum

  • Pancolitis, which affects most of your colon

  • Proctosigmoiditis, which affects your rectum and the lower part of your colon

  • Distal colitis, which affects only the left side of your colon

Because Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic condition, it can be treated with surgery and medicine, to help you reduce your symptoms and adjust to this condition. However, your doctor will discuss with you the risks and benefits of all treatment options, so you both can determine the best one for you and your lifestyle.

Some of the most common ways to treat Ulcerative Colitis (UC) are:

  • Antibiotics, which help fight bacteria in your colon while helping heal sores.

  • Immune system suppressors (immunomodulators), they weaken your immune system’s response to the disease, which often helps lower the inflammation.

  • Biologic Therapies – There’s a protein called Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) that lives in your body if you suffer from Ulcerative Colitis (UC). It causes continuous inflammation. By having these therapies, you can help block that protein so it can’t keep forming, and help reduce your inflammation and symptoms.

  • Corticosteroids, which are only recommended for a short term and when you have severe symptoms and need fast relief. Although, the side effects can be serious.

  • Anti-inflammatories, which help reduce inflammation to prevent and relieve symptoms.

Now, if you have very serious bleeding, perforation or infections, your doctor will recommend surgery.  Surgery is also recommended if you have a high risk of colon cancer.

So, if you are diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC), does that mean you can no longer enjoy life? Well friends, life is going to change for sure, but it doesn’t mean you have to fall into depression or stop doing the things you love to do.  Remember how many people are suffering from this, as mentioned above, so you are definitely not alone. However, many people keep it private, as it’s somewhat embarrassing and not a thing you really want to share. But here’s a couple things to help you cope better with Ulcerative Colitis (UC):

  • Limit dairy foods and eat products that can help you digest lactose
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages
  • Avoid fatty foods, fried foods, red meat and foods that make you gassy
  • Start eating healthier and in smaller portions – up to 6 small meals throughout the day, instead of eating 3 full big meals.
  • Experiment with foods that contain fiber
  • Find pleasant and fun exercises to help you reduce stress, like yoga
  • Visit a dietician or nutritionist to make sure you are getting all the necessary vitamins and nutrients
  • Communicate openly with family, so they can give you the support and understanding you need
  • Communicate openly with your partner, as having sex may change for people who have Ulcerative Colitis (UC). You can also find other special ways to feel loved and be intimate with your partner, then having intercourse. Talk to your doctor or a counselor if you feel distressed.
  • Many people have found it extremely helpful to join a support group, chat with others that have Ulcerative Colitis (UC) about new lifestyles, offer advice and make new friendships.
  • Monitor your health and visit your doctor as often as needed. If a medicine is not working, tell your doctor.
