Causes for Crohn’s Disease?
There is no one listed cause that doctors have been able to pinpoint in regards to Crohn’s Disease. Although there have been some factors that many patients do share.
•Nearly 3 in 20 people that develop Crohn’s Disease have a close relative that also has the disease. This suggests that there may be a small genetic factor involved.
•Some believe a specific germ may trigger the immune system to inflame portions of the gastrointestinal tract in people that are prone to develop this disease due to genetics.
•It is more common for people that smoke to develop this disease. Also, those who smoke seem to have a more severe case than those who do not smoke.
•The Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC) pill and some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory tablets (that are used for joint inflammation) have also been suggested as having triggering effects that may lead to Crohn’s Disease.
Crohn’s Disease is an ongoing condition in which symptoms seem to come and go in severity. Most people refer to the increase of symptoms as “flare-ups”. Normally the first occurrence of a flare-up is noted as being the worst. However, the severity often varies from person to person.
Complications of Crohn’s disease
If a person’s condition is severe enough, some complications can occur, which are listed below. Some of the below complications are often treated with surgery.
•Perforation – This is when a small hole or holes develop within the wall of the Gastrointestinal tract. These holes then allow the contents of the gastrointestinal tract to leak out and in turn cause an infection or abscess in the abdomen. This can be very serious and potentially life threatening.
•Stricture – This condition is when the gastrointestinal tract becomes narrower. This happens due to a buildup of scar tissue that forms on the wall of the inflamed gastrointestinal tract. This narrowing can make it difficult for food to be able to pass through which leads to feeling pain and vomiting.
•Fistula – The is the result of inflammation causing a narrow channel to form between two parts of the body, allowing contents from the gastrointestinal tract to then leak into other areas of the body.
•Cancer – The chance of developing colon cancer is increased in those with Crohn’s Disease compared to the general public; however it seems to be only a slight increase in probability.
•Osteoporosis – This is when a person’s bones become brittle and easy to fracture. This is due to the lack of nourishment from the poor absorption of nutrients from food.
Outlook for those with Crohn’s Disease
The future for each person with Crohn’s Disease can vary. It will depend how often you experience flare-ups, the severity of the flare-ups, and which area of your gastrointestinal tract has been affected by the disease.
Most people seem to have frequent and severe flare-ups while some may only have 1-2 a year. A severe flare-up can be life threatening and a small number of people have died because of having a serious complication related to Crohn’s Disease.
Close to 80% of people suffering from Crohn’s Disease require surgery during their life. In about half of those people it will be required within the first ten years of being diagnosed. Some people will need multiple surgeries over their lifetime. The surgery that is most commonly performed is to remove a Stricture that has formed. Those that develop this disease early in their life can expect to have on average up to four surgeries.
