Ulcerative Colitis – Diet Related Knowledge

Ulcerative colitis is a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that affects your digestive tract. If left untreated it can cause serious inflammation and ulcers in your digestive tract. Ulcerative colitis affects your large intestine and its symptoms develop slowly over time, not suddenly. Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis can vary depending on the level of inflammation you have within your digestive system.

–Limit foods below–
• Fiber – Some people with Ulcerative Colitis may be able to handle foods high in fiber, although many will not. With Inflammatory Bowel Disease some high fiber foods like grains, fresh fruit and fresh vegetables, may aggravate your symptoms. Try completely removing fiber from your diet to see if you are sensitive to it. If you find that you are but would still like various fruits and vegetables, try incorporating small amounts and steaming or stewing them to see if it helps your individual situation.
• Dairy Products – Most people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease have reported that by removing dairy products from their diet it has helped alleviate abdominal pain, gas, and diarrhea. Using a lactose free product may help those in this area.
• High Risk Foods – Nuts, seeds, alcohol, spicy foods/sauces, and even caffeine have been reported to irate the digestive system of those with Ulcerative Colitis and result in irritation of the Gastrointestinal Tract (GI) and pain.

–Dietary advice–
• Drink a lot of fluids – Water would be ideal. Carbonated drinks can cause increase in gas and caffeine drinks and alcohol can stimulate the intestines causing a higher chance of diarrhea.
• Smaller meals – try to reduce the portion size of your meals. Instead of eating 3 large meals try eating 5-6 smaller portion meals.
• Specialist – Consider reaching out to a dietician and be honest about your condition and the foods you eat to see if they can tailor a meal plan for you and your symptoms. Especially if you notice a weight loss you suspect is related to your condition.
Stress may not be the root cause of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) but it can certainly aggravate your symptoms and cause flare-ups. Be sure to exercise frequently to help alleviate any build ups of stress.
